Emily Girkins

Preoccupied with representational painting, Emily’s work centres on foregrounding the process of image making itself. Building on recent work undertaken whilst acting as artist in residence at the Dulwich Picture Gallery, Emily once again mines art historical sources – here focusing primarily on the distorted fakery of the ‘Portrait Historie’ or ‘Allegorical Portrait.’

Emily strives to focus attention on the structure, material qualities and multilayered process of each work’s production. Works thus highlight the presence of the artist and tackle the instability of identity, toying with ideas of absence and incompletion, and ultimately encouraging the viewers’ eye to consolidate and complete the work.
